Letter to host family
Dear host family,
Hi! Thank you so much for reading my letter. I’m a high school junior from Tokyo, Japan. I’m really excited—and a little nervous—about the possibility of staying with your family. I’d like to tell you about my daily life, family, hobbies, and why I chose to study abroad. I live in Setagaya, a quiet and green area in Tokyo known for being safe and a great place for families. I’ve lived in the same house since first grade—over 10 years now. My elementary school is just a 2-minute walk away, and I still keep in touch with my childhood friends. I feel a deep sense of belonging to my neighborhood. There are four people in my family: my dad, mom, younger sister (she’s ten years younger), and me. We are very close and always eat dinner together. During dinner, we each share the most surprising thing that happened that day. Even small stories make us laugh and feel connected. It’s a time I truly cherish. I care deeply about my little sister and often look after her like a mini parent. She’s in elementary school and always looks forward to me coming home. We play games or do homework together. I really enjoy being around kids and think I’m pretty patient and caring. From first to sixth grade, I practiced karate with my dad. I even came in third place in a local tournament. Karate taught me about discipline, respect, and never giving up. That experience still helps me stay strong today. When I entered high school, I joined the basketball team. I’m still learning, but I love sports and always give my best. I’m working hard to improve and support my team. My teammates and I are also great friends, and I enjoy spending time with them after practice. Recently, I’ve gotten into cooking. I’ve been trying simple recipes, and though I’m still a beginner, it makes me happy when my family enjoys what I make. If I stay with your family, I’d love to help cook or do chores around the house. I want to study abroad in the U.S. because I want to see more of the world. Growing up in Japan has shaped my values, but I think it’s important to connect with people from different cultures. I want to improve my English and experience everyday life where it’s spoken. I believe this experience will help me grow as a person. I’m also excited to learn about American school life and culture. I want to discover things I can’t experience in Japan. I believe it will broaden my perspective and bring me closer to my future goals. Of course, I may face challenges, like language barriers or adjusting to new customs. But I’m ready to take them on with a positive attitude. I’m eager to learn, try new things, and do my best to support your family in any way I can—whether by helping with meals, chores, or spending time with younger kids if there are any. I hope this letter helped you learn a bit about me. It would be a great honor to be part of your family. I’m looking forward to making many memories together. Thank you again for reading. I hope to meet you soon!
